Happiness is when Debits equals to Credits
In Accountancy, there is a simple rule: Debit=Credit.
This means that for every debit there must be an equal credit keeping the Inflow & Outflow balanced while this may look like it only applies to numbers but it actually reflects something very important about life. Beneath this balanced equation of double entry & financial statement lies a deep universal truth: HAPPINESS like ACCOUNTING finds its meaning in balance.
Life like accounting is full of ups & downs. Imagine life as a ledger: Every experience, every action, every emotion is a transaction. Some days; life debits our energy, patience or joy. On other days, it credits us with laughter, love or peace. The beauty of accounting is that no matter how many debits we experience, there is always a corresponding credit waiting to restore balance. And that is what happiness truly is? A state or situation where we find equilibrium between high & low, between giving and receiving.
In accounting, when debit equals credit, there is clarity. The book balances and everything feels in order whether it’s students taking accounts examinations or auditor making entries or performing audit. There arises a sense of accomplishment that things are going forward in a positive or favourable manner. Similarly, in life happiness comes when we find peace in an ongoing ups & downs. When things constantly change and the situation is on the rise and on the other times, a sudden decline in situation happens. It is important to understand that every challenge is met with a reward, every hardship with a lesson and every loss with some form of gain. Just like accountancy, it’s the cycle of harmony that follow the same equation of Debit= Credit.
Finding joy in Balance -Then – Balance Bring Happiness
In Accounts people/ Artificial persons are Personal Account, whereas all assets except debtors are real account; however Income/Expenses are nominal account but there is a fact that nominal accounts are temporary accounts, where Income & gains are considered as credit whereas expenses & losses as debit.
All ups in life and downs in life follow the rules of nominal account. Just because they are also not permanent in life.
So, we want the credit side of life- success, recognition, likings & love without acknowledging the debits that inevitably comes . Therefore, like accounting ; if there are no debits, the equation does not work. Life demand both sides of the ledger. The joy of achieving something is so much sweeter when we have tasted the struggle to get there. The credit means more when we have already experienced the debit.
Happiness than, is not about avoiding the difficult parts of life but about understanding that they are also the essential parts of life that give weight to the moments of joy. The days of hard work make the celebration feel richer. The sleepless night of worry makes the morning of peace feels more delightful. Just as a perfectly balanced ledger gives a sense of satisfaction to an accountant, a balanced life brings happiness to the soul.
The long-awaited Credit after so much of Debit
In life when we give to others, we are credited back in ways we often don’t expect. Act of kindness, selflessness and love may feel like debit in the moment costing us time, energy or resources. But life just like the best accountant always ensures that the books are balanced. That kindness comes back in the form of inner peace, stronger relationships or even the simple joy of knowing we made a difference.
That’s the reason giver seems the happiest. They have realized that by debiting their time and energy to others, they are ultimately credited with a deeper sense of fulfilment. It’s the same principle that governs accounting: you cannot take from one side without giving to other, life reward those who understand this balance.
The Emotional Ledger
Our emotional lives are much like financial statements. There are times when our energy is drained. When life debit us heavily with responsibilities, challenges or loss. It’s the time when we are overwhelmed as if emotions has an unfavourable balance. But if we trust the rule of accounting, we know that credits are on the way. May it be support from loved ones, small wins or even a moment of calm. Life balances itself if we allow it.
Happiness is a trust, a trust that our emotional ledger will get balance if not immediately than later definitely. It’s about knowing that even when we are in the midst of life’s Debits, the credits are not for behind. Sometime credits are self-balancing it can be our own resilience, strength and ability to adapt. Sometime our hard work, luck or unexpected opportunities balances them. Either way the balance is restored.
Life’s Simple Equation:- The Happiness Equation
Debits equal Credits is more than a rule for accounting. It’s a reminder that life is about balance. Happiness is not found in avoiding the debits but in balancing both sides of equation. It’s about understanding that every challenge, every hardship every moment of giving is a part of interim report that will ultimately lead to complete balancing of account at the end and thus leads to joy.
So, next time you feel suppressed in life, remember the equation. Happiness like accounting is about trusting the process knowing that balance is not just the goal but a constant, ongoing journey. In accounting equation also when Assets are increased either other assets decrease or some liability increases and vice-versa. So, for every Debit there is a Credit and in that balance we find peace, fulfilment and ultimately the satisfaction to happiness.
